Empire Builders: Dutch Golden Age

December 8 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The Dutch Revolt, Eighty Years War, Independence (2021, 55 min.)

In this episode, we chart the Protestant uprising in the Low Countries and the war with Spain that followed. We witness a Dutch Republic that emerged from this religious and cultural conflict which promoted liberal and mercantile values which changed the face of civil society increasingly at odds with an old Europe ruled by royal elites.

How did the newly independent Netherlands emerge as a global superpower in the seventeenth century? This two-part series chronicles naval exploration and global commerce, scientific advances, and the booming art market in the Dutch Golden Age. Offered in conjunction with the special exhibition Dutch Art in a Global Age: Masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
